Sexuality
What is Sexual Identity?
Definitively, sexual identity is difficult to pin down.
Sexual Identity
Sexual identity is perplexing and raises questions, not only for kids but for adults. Many adults assume that sexual identity is synonymous with sexual orientation, and they exclude other vital aspects. Sexual identity makes up a large part of the overall identity of some adolescents; for others, it represents a smaller part. Like most adults, most teens have both private and public sexual identities. Sexual identity is not always fixed and stable but can be fluid, changing over the course of the teen years or even over a lifetime.
Is Sexual Orientation a Choice?
There is increasing evidence that sexual orientation has at least some biological basis, and most people report that their sexual orientation is not something they have chosen. Instead, most people, regardless of their sexual orientation, feel that their sexual orientation is something that has always been there as it is. It is normal to question your sexual orientation. Many people do this during their college years, when they are exposed to new people and new experiences. Of course, some people explore their sexual orientation at a younger or older age.
The incorporation of Article 8 into domestic law via the Human Rights Act 1998 brings with it the requirement upon the state to respect aspects of private life including sexual identity and sexuality and corresponding rights to develop relationships with whom one chooses.

LGB Faculty/ Staff Caucus
The Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Faculty and Staff Caucus at Virginia Tech was formed in 1992 as an affiliate of the Women’s Network. The caucus’s purpose is to improve the working and learning environment for gay, lesbian, and bisexual members of the Tech community and, by fostering an atmosphere of tolerance and understanding, to improve productivity and quality of life for all VT employees and students. Membership includes faculty and staff members and graduate students. Monthly meetings are open to individuals who support these objectives.
